Rice Craig, the largest and most successful law office between Auckland and Hamilton, celebrated its 100th anniversary in practice on 17 March 2024. The firm was started by Stephen Rice 100 years ago. The celebrations were held at the Hilton Hotel in Karaka, and it was a fun event to be among such esteemed friends, many of whom have gone on to the top echelon of legal practice.
Maurice Rice, who followed on from his father, was undoubtedly responsible for the firm’s continued growth and success. He was a brilliant lawyer, clever in intellect and practical, and was hugely respected in the community as a man of integrity.
Gary Craig, who delivered the speech and toast to the firm at the centenary celebrations, was also a key figure in the firm’s success. He had administrative genius and exceptional thoroughness. Gary provided the rudder the firm required in a changing world. He remained a partner at the firm for many years.
Rice Craig has seen many changes, including the growth of Papakura and the expansion of the firm itself. The firm has acted for the Papakura Borough Council, builders, developers, and the Papakura Army Camp, among others. Significant industries such as Cadbury’s Chocolate factory, Humes Pipes, and Lees Industries were also established, causing Papakura to rapidly expand, and Rice Craig shared in this expansion.
The success of Rice Craig can be attributed to the combination of outstanding partners and talented, dedicated staff. The firm has had many notable partners and staff members over the years, all of whom have contributed to its success.
John Sieprath joined the partnership in the 1980s and is an outstanding lawyer and person of immense integrity. John, now Rice Craigs most senior Partner, is loved by clients and staff alike.
In the 1990s, Neville Woods and Scott Hunter joined the partnership and added an extra dimension to the firm. Neville, with his intellect and court expertise, took charge of the litigation department, and Scott, with his commercial law talent, took charge of the commercial law department.
Rice Craig is now looking to the future, with partners Philip Norton and Patrick O’Halloran guiding the firm through the years ahead. Both Philip and Patrick are exceptional legal Practitioners with deep connections within our local community. Congratulations to Rice Craig on achieving 100 years of service to Papakura!
Rice Craig would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all past staff, colleagues within the profession, other stakeholders, and the support received from professional bodies. The firm is also grateful for the support and congratulations received from its customers. Rice Craig remains committed to serving our local community and looks forward to many more years of success.
